Sony's Greatest Quotes!

Here are some of Sony's greatest quotes. Most of them are about their gaming division and the competition, but there a couple other gems in there, too.

"Most people, I think, don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?"
- Thomas Hesse, Sony BMG's president of global digital business, responding to the outcry over Sony's DRM Rootkit spyware uncovered on its music CDs

"You can look at the software that they sell. All their licensed kid stuff. So, what we're doing with the PlayStation Portable is really establishing a new marketplace, and establishing, frankly, a new beachhead."
- Peter Dille, Sony US Senior Vice President of Marketing, on comparing PSP to DS

“The idea of a handheld rivalry with Nintendo is an irrelevance. Those formats don't appear in our planning. It's not a fair comparison; not fair on them, I should stress. That sounds arrogant, maybe, but it's the truth. With the DS , it's fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen. But I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that."
- Phil Harrison, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, on comparing PSP to DS in an interview with MCV

"It’s probably too cheap…"
– Ken Kutaragi, Regarding the $499 to $599 price point

"(the PS3) is not a game machine…"
- Ken Kutaragi, Regarding the machine’s beefy hardware architecture

"The name of the game is not market share, it’s how fast we (Sony) can grow the industry."
– Ken Kutaragi, regarding competition from Microsoft and Nintendo

"…for consumers to think to themselves ‘I will work more hours to buy one’. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else."
– Ken Kutaragi, explaining their marketing goals for the PS3

"We do not care."
– Kaz Hirai, current President of Computer Entertainment, regarding competition from Microsoft and Nintendo

"I don't think the battle would be any different with or without Grand Theft Auto... I don't think it (losing Grand Theft Auto would) hurts us. No, I really don't."
- Jack Tretton, Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO

"If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1200 bucks for it."
- Jack Tretton, Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO

"The first five million are going to buy it (PS3), whatever it is, even [if] it didn't have games."
- David Reeves, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO

"Microsoft does not concern us. Microsoft is not a technology company."
- Nobuyuki Idei, Sony chief corporate adviser in an interview with BBC NEWS

"A bit pricey."
- Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, speaking about Nintendo Wii in an interview with the age.com.au

"We have a lot of respect for Nintendo, but with a December launch, how much stock are they going to get at a AU$400 price point? What is the consumer offering? So I don't think anyone will do more units than a PS2 this (Christmas)."
- Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, regarding the launch of Nintendo Wii

"Sorry you didn't have the opportunity to buy a PS3 this year, but I'm sure it beats lining up in a queue for hours on end only to be told the store has sold out."
- Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Australia in an interview with the age.com.au

"There’s this sort of misunderstanding that the Blu-ray disc player for movies is somehow burdening the console with unnecessary cost. That is completely not true... Once we had that storage capacity on Blu-ray Disc, adding the movie playback functionality was extremely cost-effective, [the cost] is actually non-existent."
- Phil Harrison, regarding the wholesale cost of the system’s Blu-ray player

"Nobody will ever use 100% of PS3's capability"
- Phil Harrison, president of Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios speaking with MTV news.

"The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC."
- Phil Harrison, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, in an interview with GameSpot

"I have no concerns about the competition."
- Phil Harrison, president of Sony Worldwide Studios speaking at the Game Developer Conference

"I don’t think we’re arrogant."
– Phil Harrison, regarding consumer perception of Sony

"We're certainly not interested in Gimmicks."
- Kaz Hirai0 E32k6, right before showing off Eye of Judgement.

"Nintendo knows its target audience, because it has really narrowed that down; and it’s pretty much defined by a boy or girl’s ability to admire Pokemon."
- Phil Harrison, president of Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios

"But I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick."
- Sony executive Phil Harrison cuts to the chase with his incisive analysis of the Nintendo DS in gaming paper MCV.

"Consider the US with its massive land and cheap people. Then you look at the UK - a little island where rent and rates are at an absolute premium, and the cost of people is a lot more."
- Sony's take on the consumers, as told by UK Managing Director Ray Maguire to website gamesindustry.biz

These are better than Bushisms. However, you should include a date for the quotes. :)

No wonder this company is having a hard time. Every executive is saying something completly stupid! Can we get some decent leadership for Sony and then maybe Sony will put out better products!

What's wrong with this quote? It's completely valid. PS3 games are on Blu-Ray discs, so it requires a BD drive by default.

Why then would allowing you to watch BD movies make it more expensive?

Santtu said...

george, is that sarcasm? :)

Rob Locke said...

well, george.. that just went over your head.

Ian said...

What about, "Massive Damage"?!

omgwtfbaii said...

@george
there is no reason to even put the games on blu-ray to begin with-- no developer is using that much space for a game at the present moment, and they probably won't be using that much space until well past the PS3's lifecycle, either. so, why use blu-ray as the ps3's media format?

answer: to ensure the success of blu-ray movies in the current format war.

so yeah, the cost of including blu-ray does increase the price of the system. no reason to have blu-ray except for movies. i can't believe i'm actually explaining this.

George said...

I'm playing devil's advocate here, you have to read closely to what he ACTUALLY said.

This statement is completely true. True, the PS3 didn't NEED to use BD ; but whether or not a BD player is necessary for PS3 games is COMPLETELY irrelevant to what he's actually saying.

Zander said...

@ omgwtfbaii:

That's statement is almost as poorly educated as the ones above by the execs.

Look at the size of the following games:
UT2003
NFS:MW and Carbon
GTA:SA/VC

They're huge. Albeit they fit on a dvd, GTA:VC and GTA:SA actually had to scale back their games so they could fit it on a disc. And now with much more rendering power compared to most anything on the market (including PC's) they are able to use more/higher resolution textures and cram more poly's in a scene, among other things. While it may be a while before we're touching the Blu-ray max, GTA4 and UT2k7 will be using that extra overhead to their advantage, and stepping beyond the 4 GB max (possibly even the 8GB DL-DVD max).

@George: While you are correct in your analysis, the reason this quote is on here because the concept of the blu-ray's existence, and the common conception that it adds "unnecessary" cost either went over the exec's head, or he was finding away around saying "yeah, it is expensive." The presence of blu-ray capability on the PS3 greatly increased costs. Period. However the movie-playback feature probably is "non-existent". the only real debate here is whether or not that additional cost for the blu-ray functionality as a whole was an "unnecessary cost"

Zander said...

The cost of the blu-ray movie playback feature is "nonexistent" *
not the feature itself. my bad.

omgwtfbaii said...

@zander

i'm not saying that i think DVD alone is sufficient, i'm saying that blu-ray is complete overkill.

George said...

I would be interested to know exactly what question he was answering.

I don't believe it went over his head at all; I think he was asked something along the lines of "Isn't the PS3 overpriced because it has a BD player?"

Now, there's no question having Blu-Ray caused the unit be more expensive.

But does someone in his position say "Well yeah of course! We wanted to promote our HD format so we made the PS3 more expensive by including it."

No, obviously not. So what does he do? He spins his response, ignoring the implication of the question and instead answering it as literally as possible and twisting it to only speak about it in the context of movies, and therefore remain factually accurate in the process.

Frederic said...

@ omgwtfbaii

And what intermediate are you suggesting that is between DVD and Blu-Ray and that cost less than blu-Ray for the player and for the medium itself?

Michael said...

@George

Read your last paragraph, THAT is why the quote is humorous. He's doing the typical "Dodge the first question and answer a different question" thing. Just like most execs do.

Wm said...

Sony games don't need more space than a DVD to be distributed. They don't need the expensive BluRay drive for the games and to be honest, not even for HD movies either. A lot of Hollywood movies include bonus material to push movies past the 4.7 Gig limit of a Single Layer DVD disc to make coping harder. Now they're going to be on BluRay and HDDVD.

It's not about being better for the customer, it's about controlling the market. They're in a position of power and we can't make them do it our way. It's good enough and there's only one competitor, so they're not worried. They can co-exist.

We have 2 choices, pay or go without.

George said...

Exactly, that's why I don't see what's so noteworthy about the quote, It's exactly like all of the other PR spin you see out there.

Actually that's incorrect. Uncompressed HD video is something like 8.3GB per hour of data.

"Look at the size of the following games.... they're huge".

To be honest - working in game development myself - you concentrate optimisation efforts where you have least resources. On a PS3 game, you don't have to concentrate too hard on disk usage.
The game being huge doesn't mean it necessarily needs that space, it may just be that they never bothered to optimise/compress for disk space as they just didn't need to.
Texture size and poly count will hit frame rate and ram usage way before you ever start worrying about disk space for those.

Sergey said...

@George

"Actually that's incorrect. Uncompressed HD video is something like 8.3GB per hour of data"

FYI: HD-SDI SMPTE 292M Standard defines professional uncompressed video has a bitrate of 1.485Gbit/sec with translates to approx 684 GB !! per hour of data !

Both BD and HD-DVD use compressed video (ether MPEG-2, VC1 or H.264)

Using H.264 or VC1 compressed movie in 2h ballpark take exactly 4.7gb in 720p resolution or 8.4Gb in 1080p. Now tell me again why would I need 50 Gb BD-DL ROM media to store 8.4Gb movie on it??
